When hosting an open house, you allow strangers into your home. I mean, how else are you going to find a buyer for your property, right? Don’t be surprised when I say that buyers look in every nook and cranny of your house when considering whether to buy it or not. Believe me, they look everywhere! So, it’s important to lock up or remove anything you find valuable before you let anyone come traipsing through your house. But securing your stuff means more than just locking up your jewelry and money. It also includes prescription drugs.
Securing Your Stuff Before a Showing
Yes, I said prescription medications. Painkillers like OxyContin, Codeine, and Morphine seem like no-brainers, right? But other ones like Adderall, Zoloft, Ambien, and Xanax should also be taken out of the house before you show it. Even over-the-counter medication should be removed to avoid temptation from sticky fingers. NyQuil, Sudafed, and Prilosec can be mixed with other drugs and/or alcohol to create an enhanced “high”. Desperate people look for whatever they can use to get their fix. And if you leave it out in not-so-plain sight, they just might take it off your hands.
What to Do Before a Viewing
Take a walk around your home. Look at what might be easy to pick up and take without someone noticing. That includes medication, jewelry, expensive pens, wine bottles, perfume, silverware, etc. Always lock up guns and ammo in your gun safe. Keep your money, checkbook, and other important financial information locked up as well. Credit cards, bank statements, tax information, financial documents all need to be secured from prying eyes. Better yet, put all of this into a box that can easily be taken with you when you leave.
Involve Your Agent
Ask your real estate agent to walk through your home with you to see if there is anything they can see that you might have missed as well. The second pair of experienced eyes could make a world of difference. Ask them to keep an eye out for wandering buyers, too. Even so, they can’t be everywhere at once. Ultimately, it’s up to you to secure your stuff before a showing. Removing the temptation of any sort ensures nothing of value will be taken while your property is on the Havasu real estate market.
