One of the first steps you need to make when listing your home on the Havasu real estate market is to hire a good real estate agent. Sure, you could list your real estate in Lake Havasu yourself. It may seem like you save yourself money that way (no commission to pay). But, in actuality, it could end up costing you money. Besides the time involved in taking photos, marketing your listing, and holding open houses, you need to have a working knowledge of current market trends as well as top-notch negotiation skills. Then, there’s juggling inspections, deadlines, and all that paperwork. Geesh! Paying a commission doesn’t sound too bad now, does it? Before you play real estate agent roulette, find out what you need to ask an agent before hiring them as part of your team.

Real Estate Agent Roulette: How to Pick the Right Agent for You


The first spin of real estate agent roulette is to ask about an agent’s experience. How long have they been selling homes? Even more specifically, how long have they been doing this in the Havasu real estate market? Understanding current market trends helps get your real estate in Lake Havasu sold faster and, oftentimes, for more money.


Next, ask your real estate agent what kind of education they have had. Are they a licensed REALTOR®? This designation is different than a real estate agent. While all REALTORS are agents, not all real estate agents are REALTORS. To receive the REALTOR® designation, an agent must sign up with the National Association of REALTORS® and adhere to their strict code of ethics. These may be more restrictive than even state guidelines require. Any real estate agent that pledges to uphold the standards that the REALTOR® designation requires when selling your real estate in Lake Havasu deserves your consideration to represent your home sale.


Then, ask them about their marketing plan. Where do they advertise? Do they list your property on the MLS for other agents to see? Will they be holding open houses? If so, when and how often? Do they have a good working relationship with other agents in the Havasu real estate market? How are their negotiation skills? Ask to see references for past clients. Then, contact them to ask about their experience with the agent selling their real estate in Lake Havasu.


Finally, let’s talk about communication. Over the next several weeks, you’ll be trusting this individual with one of your biggest financial assets. You want someone who will communicate with you as often as you want and in the manner to which you’re comfortable. How do they plan on keeping you abreast of what’s happening with your property? Will they email, text or call you? Hire someone who works with you. If you would rather receive a call than an email, tell them. Want a weekly update? Tell them. Need to hear from them more often? Tell them. Would you rather receive a face-to-face update than a text or phone call? Tell them. Bottom line: you’re the boss. If they can’t meet your demands, they’re not the one for you.
